What Is TMJ Dysfunction?
TMJ dysfunction refers to problems with the temporomandibular joint, the hinge connecting your jawbone to your skull just in front of each ear. When this joint (or the muscles that move it) isn't working the way it should, it can cause jaw pain, clicking or popping, difficulty opening your mouth fully, and headaches that radiate into the temples, ears, or neck. TMJ dysfunction is often tied to muscle tension, teeth grinding or clenching, and misalignment in the neck and jaw that develops over time. Left unaddressed, it tends to get worse, which is why identifying and treating the root cause, not just masking the symptoms, matters.
Dealing With Jaw Pain, Clicking, or Frequent Headaches?
Jaw pain has a way of showing up everywhere else: tension headaches, ear discomfort, tight shoulders, even trouble chewing or sleeping. A clicking or popping jaw might seem minor at first, but for many people it's a sign the joint and surrounding muscles are already under strain. Ignoring it usually means the problem gets more entrenched, not less.
A Combined Approach to Treating the Root Cause
At Towson Integrative Health, TMJ care isn't just chiropractic adjustments and it isn't just physical therapy. It's both, delivered together at every visit by Dr. Paul Abosh. Jaw dysfunction is rarely isolated to the jaw itself; it's frequently connected to alignment and muscle tension in the neck and upper spine. Addressing only the jaw, or only the neck, tends to leave part of the problem untouched. Combining chiropractic adjustments with physical therapy techniques, in the same office and on the same visit, lets us treat the whole picture instead of chasing symptoms one at a time.

What TMJ Treatment Looks Like Here
Chiropractic Adjustments: Gentle correction of alignment in the jaw and upper neck to reduce the strain that's driving your symptoms.
Soft Tissue & Dry Needling: Hands-on release and dry needling of the jaw, temple, and neck muscles, the muscles most often responsible for clicking, tightness, and pain.
Rehab Exercises & Kinesiotaping: Targeted exercises and taping to support the joint between visits and help relief last, not just fade after you leave the office.
